Silli Chilli

Hospitality

Welcome to Silli Chilli. As the name suggests, this Asian quick service restaurant situated in the heart of the bustling high street at Lokhandwala has something different to offer customers.

The owners have crafted a story which depicts the journey of the mascots, ‘Silli’ and ‘Chilli’ from China to India, bringing the Wok Concept. Breaking from the conundrum of the typical perception of Interior Design associated with Chinese restaurants, the designers have approached this space with an urban twist. The design evokes a balance of vibrance, graphics and functional space planning. The walls are adorned with graphics showing the mascot’s journey. Moreover, the space has creative display and an interactive wall. The high and low seating single benches promote community dining and human social networking. The signature usage of red as seen in Asian restaurants has been limited to the furniture accents. The stools are reminiscent of chopsticks. In contrast, the colours and materials on the counters and flooring are trendy geometric patterns. The Copper AC Duct emphasizes ‘Industrial Chic’ to the urban settlement we are catering to.

Breaking from the conundrum of the typical perception of interior design associated with Chinese restaurants, the designers Jannat Vasi & Rohit Bhoite have approached the design for ‘SilliChilli’ – a quick service restaurant at Andheri, Mumbai – with an urban twist. The designers along with the clients crafted a story, which depicts the journey of two mascots, ‘Silli’ and ‘Chilli’ from China to India, bringing the wok concept.

While designing Silli Chilli in the busy streets of Lohkandwala Complex at Andheri, Mumbai, the designers fused the functionality of space planning and practicality with the overall sense of aesthetics and brand visibility. The design projects this restaurant’s motto ‘Urban Street Take-Away’ in the form of wall graphics, Asian inspired furniture and interactive walls which promote human social networking. The clients are young entrepreneurs with clarity on having a youthful exuberance brought into the space, which reflects the brand’s energy and Asian fast food cuisine. The designers along with the clients crafted a story, which depicts the journey of the mascots, ‘Silli’ and ‘Chilli’ from China to India, bringing the Wok Concept. Treating the space as a black canvas, the designers have artfully used dark and light materials to justify the balance of warmth and space.

The designers fused functionality of space planning and practicality with the overall sense of aesthetics and brand visibility, which was adapted in the form of wall graphics. The walls are adorned with graphics showing the mascot’s journey. The right blackboard wall acts as a base for the copper duct running across the restaurant.

The highlight feature of the space is the geometric water jet cut custom Matt Grey and Glossy White tile floor that create different responses via texture, colour and light refraction. This element adds innovativeness to the restaurant.

The acoustic gypsum false ceiling is painted white to visually increase the sense of volume of the restaurant and merge non-attention driven mandatory services such as the AC, fans and light fixtures. The walls have hidden concealed storage units. The high and low seating single benches promote community dining. The signature usage of red as seen in Asian restaurants has been limited to the furniture accents. Asian inspired furniture and interactive chalk walls, which promote human social networking.

Applying skills of playful experimentation and in-depth research, the designers used white as a neutral palette and coloured the space visually with static art and a black chalkboard wall for customer interaction. Accents of copper and use of wood add warmth to the decor. The stools are conceptualized from chopsticks. In contrast, the colours and materials on the counters and flooring are trendy clean-cut patterns. The Copper AC Duct emphasizes ‘Industrial Chic’ to the urban settlement.
